Stay off my food Part 2: The luncheons

LuncheonThe food in the fridge is mine not yours!
I was working in the company where we had kitchenette on each floor and it was great. When we moved upstairs we had access to a kitchenette it was safe to put our food in the refrigerator. Six month later, we had to move back downstairs to our old location. The kitchenette this time, was located by the entry of the floor, we started to put our own food and beverage in it with our name on it. I started to bring 5 bottles of water each day, since we did not have purified water fountains. A week after I started doing this, I noticed one day, when I came to pick up one of the bottles the count was off. At that time, I had a co-worker coming into the kitchenette, I made a statement about it. She mentioned to me that she and others in the team have experienced some unpleasant surprises. They have found someone going through their food, eating some, opening others. It was disappointing to hear about it. Also, why would you steal a bottle of water or someone else’s lunch?
I had enough, I decided to go to a store that had a sale on a small compact refrigerator. I bought one and quietly, on a Saturday morning, moved it in my work space. It was located under my desk it wasn’t visible to anyone. Some of the co-workers were made aware of it, they started to leave their lunches in it. We never had our food or drinks taken away from us again. This story is a pretty sad scenario regarding the honesty of people.

Leave some food for the rest of us!
We had from time to time free luncheons at work. We used to order from different restaurants around town. But one person who wanted to order, wasn’t giving any consideration to the type of people who were going to eat.   Mainly large men. Again, if you have males in the office you are never going to see them eating one piece of pizza or a small scoop of lasagna. An order was placed with Famous Dave’s. By the time some of the males in the office helped themselves, you could see their plates were ready to collapse because of the mountain of food that was on the plate. The last person that went through the line did not have a chance to enjoy some of the meat but only beans. By the time these “men” were done swallowing their food, they would be right back in the line. They were doing that each time we had a luncheon. I learned very quickly if you are not in the front of the line, you would be lucky if there would be food left for you. It was unfortunately that adult males were so devoid of common courtesy and manners, they didn’t realize this was a lunch for all the employees, not just them.  I must admit most of the time I would not do the luncheon because of all the deadlines I had to meet, by the time I wanted to eat nothing was left. Like we say boys will be boys….

Are you trying to kill us? (This one is a warning to anyone who is a food trollers.)
We were preparing to move from our current office location to a new location. It was time to clean up the office get rides of what was not needed. The Grande Duchesse had retired from work, a new person came onboard to take over her job. He started to clean up his office and found two boxes (one chocolate fudge, one caramel fudge) instead of verifying the expiration date he just put them on the counter for everyone to grab. These had expired and were over a year old. Eliza and I saw that I started to laugh and told her I would not touch this at all. She indeed told me it was safe, she would pick up one. She wasn’t the only one who did that, the same day a couple of people did grab a jar. Two days later we heard one individual was home sick, we also got an email sent by the president of the company. The other worker had told him he had found a worm in his chocolate jar. When I read the email I laughed so hard, Yes! I did I am guilty. The president also lectures us about leaving food for everyone to grab. I made a comment to the individual who did that, he didn’t care. The most interesting part I assumed someone got rid of the boxes, well not so fast a week later I was looking above the cupboards when I saw both boxes sitting on the top of it. I laugh so hard I couldn’t believe they never got rid of them after the two incidents. The sick worker recovered within a couple of days.

My advice to the trollers and grabbers before you decide to take something that has been left on the counter for free, ask yourself, do you know how long this has been out? If this is in a container of some sort look for the expiration date. If this is outdated do not eat it, if you decide you are going to do it, it will be at your own risk.

The best one for last: eating air
It is the 3rd of July, we got an unexpected luncheon at the office this time the restaurant is a burger place. We all went online to look at the menu. I decided to go with a bourbon burger with a side of coleslaw, I do not eat much meat, but that day I was craving some. The order was supposed to arrive at the office around 12:30 pm. The order arrived, Stella was going through each order trying to match everyone’s order. I was hungry since I had been in the office since around 4:00 AM, my appetite had grown tremendously. I waited patiently by the food, to make it faster I helped to distribute the orders to everyone. I noticed our receptionist helped herself before Stella could check what she took. We, except for the receptionist, went to the conference room. I opened the box with my name on it and when I looked at the food, it was not a bun but focaccia bread with a piece of chicken on it. Mary open hers it was Judy’s order. Stella wasn’t capable to even assign the correct lunch to anyone. Pat looked at my box and told me it was the same order he had on his box. After five minutes Stella asked me if I wanted her to call them back to check. I said yes, I wasn’t planning on eating it. She disappeared, ten minutes later she came back and asked me if I wanted to have a new order deliver for me. I said yes that sounded good and it should be delivered within the hour, at that time It was 1:00PM so the order should arrive by 2:00PM. Stella came back, while everyone else was eating we were starting a conversation. All a sudden Stella stood up, took my lunch box and walked away. She came back a couple of minute later to let us know the receptionist took and ate my lunch. Not only this but she gave her the other lunch which she proceeded to eat as well. We were all stunned about it, we all went back to our desks. It was now 2:25PM the lunch did not arrive. I had to tell Stella to cancel the order since it should have been delivered 25 minutes ago. I left that day with an empty stomach. I was stunned by two things, the receptionist’s action and Stella’s lack of follow-up for the orders. To make it even better neither one of them apologized for their misdeeds. On the other hand, I had a great late launch/diner at home.
