As we are rapidly approaching winter, the weather, in some parts of the US, is becoming colder and gloomy. I have noticed that some individuals are becoming a lot like the weather. Their spirits are not shining brightly, instead they are becoming dimmer.
I have also noticed clothing stores that use to display beautiful bright colors during the spring and summer months, those colors are gone. They have been replaced by depressing darker colors like maroon, gray and olive.
How can you keep your spirit’s up when the colder season is upon us?
I opted several years ago, to always wear bright colors year-round. Colors have a wonderful therapeutic effect. Because the stores have more somber colors, I couldn’t find anything that would lift my spirit. The lack of beautiful colors resulted in my decision to purchase Pashminas. I have over 40 of them and I love wearing one every day. It not only keeps me warm, but the colors are lifting my spirit. I still do not understand why the fashion industry would not use bright colors in their collections all year round.
I keep my thoughts positive, I know you are going to tell me “Emma, easier said than done”. You are correct, you must fake it until you make it. I did an experiment a few years ago. When people would ask me “how are you doing today”? I would always answer “It is another day in Paradise”. In the beginning it was pure sarcasm but saying that every day for a couple of months became natural to me. I believed those words.
Each time I respond this way, the first reaction I get is laughter, people think I am joking. I have diffused challenging situations at work with those 6 words. It brought laughter at first, then everyone started to relax and speak about their issues without the screaming and ranting. Their stress level went down, the communication could flow. At the end of the conversation they were smiling and laughing.
How about music? You can create your own playlist that makes you want to dance. Something that would inspire you, that would make you want to move, even sing.
To stay in the artistic side why not painting or coloring. If you feel you are neither “Monet or Gauguin” to draw, you can always buy coloring books. This is a great way to play with colors. If you wish, after you are done, transfer them to a scrapbook.
Cooking, yes you read it correctly, cooking using colorful vegetables. This is a great way to eat more vegetables but also to add new recipes to your routine. We always say eating starts with the eyes, the more colorful a dish the better it is.
Images are a great way to lift your spirits. Print vibrant pictures of beaches or anything that would remind you of summertime. Place them in strategic places around your home, like your kitchen cabinets or next to your bathroom mirror. Each time you pass near them just look at them this could help lift your spirit.
Listening to meditation you can search on YouTube, there are a lot of meditation’s channels you can listen too.
At work keep the “Debbi downer” away from you. If they are depressed, you do not have to be dragged into their web.
To keep your spirits up, play, have fun, become a kid again let your inner child be free. Life is too short to be moody.
